The engine dynamometer (dyno) allows testing the engine alone. It is necessary to have the engine out of the vehicle. It offers the advantage of measuring the actual torque & horsepower output at the engine flywheel. The liquid cooled engines are cooled by automatic water to water intercooler, which maintains the engine cooling system temperature to plus or minus two degrees of a preset value. A similar system is used to control oil temperature. This dyno is used to run programmed engine break in before putting the engine into the vehicle.
The engine dyno’s most valuable function is as a research & development tool for optimizing engine performance items. These items include, carburetor development, cam timing, fuel distribution and octane, exhaust systems, distributor timing, air-fuel ratio & intake manifold configuration, along with engine internal Since the readings are corrected to standard temperature, barometric pressure, and humidity, actual sea level engine torque & horsepower values are obtained. Having the engine mounted on the open dyno frame out of the vehicle body allows easy access to the engine to make changes.
